During the 19th Century, Newport, Rhode Island served as a summer playground for America’s wealthiest families, like the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Morgans. These families spent their summers on Newport’s coastline, at what they referred to as their “summer cottages.” To the average person today, these summer cottages are breathtaking, and are one of the most popular attractions in Newport today. This summer, there are a couple of unique events at one of our favorite mansions, Doris Duke’s Rough Point. Come celebrate in style with us! Doris Duke’s Rough Point Mansion
Rough Point is the former home of heiress Doris Duke. This sprawling oceanfront estate features a fine collection of French furniture, European art, Chinese porcelains, and Flemish tapestries, and a variety of other rotating collections. Rough Point is maintained by the Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF), and is open every Tuesday – Sunday to visitors.
There are some exciting events coming to Rough Point this summer. On July 11, 2018, celebrate with the popular Party Like its 1968 Garden Party. There will be genteel lawn games, vintage cocktails, and Bossa Nova music by the International String Trio. On July 17, 2018, take a tour of Doris Duke’s costume collection, including go-go boots, caftans, and more. In August, join Rough Point for a look at fashion and society in the 1960’s. You can also explore the current exhibit at the Rough Point Museum, called Designing for Doris.
As a fun aside, we’d like to note that the Cliffside Inn was the recipient of the Doris Duke Historic Preservation Award in 2014; a recognition of the meticulous restoration work by Innkeepers Bill & Nancy Bagwill.
