Kicking off this year’s season in early May is the arrival of the world-class Volvo Ocean Race, considered by many to be the world’s premier offshore sailing race.  The event kicks off in Newport on May 8, and wraps up May 20, 2018.  This is the second time the Volvo Ocean Race will be making a stopover in Newport, RI. Ft Adams will be the Race Village, with events daily while the boats are in Newport.  The first weekend of the Volvo Ocean Race is also your first chance to glimpse tall ships as they pull into Newport’s harbor. The Newport stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race is one of 11 offshore legs of the this around the world race; over 45,000 nautical miles, crossing four oceans, touching six continents and reaching 12 landmark host cities. During the first weekend of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover, from May 7 – 9, the Tall Ship Eagle will pull into Newport’s Harbor. This stunning 295-foot ship, a training vessel for the U.S. Coast Guard, is the only active-duty sailing vessel in America’s military. If you miss the Tall Ship Eagle during its visit to Newport Harbor, there is another chance Tall Ships at the Volvo Ocean Race in Newportto see one of the magnificent tall ships in June, when the Portuguese Navy’s 292-foot Tall Ship Sagres visits Newport, docking at Fort Adams, from June 4th – 7th.

Newport is known as the sailing capital of the world for a reason.
