The Touro Synagogue

The Touro Synagogue, located in the heart of Newport, holds its place in history as the oldest American Synagogue.  As mentioned in the Synagogue’s history, the first Jewish Settlers came to Newport in the mid-17th Century, and formed what was then the second oldest Jewish congregation in America.  As Newport’s importance in the mercantile industry grew, so too did the Jewish population in the area.  Accordingly, construction began on New England’s first Synagogue in 1759 by self-taught architect Peter Harrison. Throughout the American Revolution, the Synagogue actually served as a military hospital for British Troops, which, thankfully, kept it’s beautiful structure from being used as firewood.  The Synagogue was dedicated as a National Historic Site in 1946, and it still remains an active site of religious Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode islandworship.

From now through April 27th, visitors can tour the Touro Synagogue on Sundays only.  Starting on April 29, 2018, tours will be available Monday – Friday, during limited hours.  Also, each year the Touro Synagogue holds a public reading of the George Washington letter, which he read to the congregation in August of 1870, as a celebration and pronouncement of religious freedom.
