Newport Art Museum

The Newport Art Museum is a spectacular space.  The museum is housed in the Griswold House on Newport’s famous Bellevue Avenue, purchased for this purpose in 1915.  Seeing the Griswold House itself is worth a visit to the museum.  The historic building is one of the best examples of Richard Morris Hunt’s Modern Gothic or American “Stick-Style” architecture in existence today. The house has been lovingly restored to make room for exhibits at the Art Museum.  An additional building, the Cushing Gallery, was added to the art museum campus in 1920. The Newport Art Museum houses a renowned permanent collection of American art, most of which focuses on works from the late 19th century to the present day. In addition to the permanent collections, current exhibits at the museum include:

In the coming year, 2018, there are already two great exhibits scheduled for the Newport Art Museum.  They include:

Be sure to check out the Newport Art Museum Winter Speaker Series, every Saturday at 2:00 PM from January 6th to February 17th.  The Cliffside Inn has been a sponsor of the speaker series for several years.

Local Art at the Cliffside Inn

As owners of the Cliffside Inn, we have been dedicated patrons of the arts in Newport for years. One of our favorite local art galleries, located across the street from the Newport Art Museum, is the Spring Bull Gallery, which is owned by a collective of local artists. Our Inn has a large collection of works that we’ve purchased from the gallery.  One of our suites is dedicated to the Grosvenor family of artists.  The Grosvenors have been patrons of the Newport art community for decades and the Grosvenor Suite features original works by Dick Grosvenor, his wife Margot as well as their sons, John and Rick Grosvenor and their daughter, Holly Grosvenor.  Dick Grosvenor was once president of the Newport Art Museum and was a founding artist-member of the Spring Bull Gallery. On the first Saturday of every month, the Spring Bull Gallery introduces a new exhibit with an open house.  It is an event that is very popular with our guests. Two of our favorite annual exhibits are Les Petites Oeuvres; open now through the end of the year and Fakes & Forgeries, which takes place in February.

If you are interested in staying connected with the Newport arts scene throughout the year, Discover Newport created a recent blog, which features current exhibits at local museums and galleries.  Make your reservation at our Newport Bed and Breakfast today, and let us introduce you to the wonderful world of art in Newport.
