Sailing in Newport

Sailing is a central tenet to summers in Newport.  Our 400 miles of coastline, consistent breezes and long history of hosting sailing events has earned Newport the nickname the “Sailing Capital of the World.”  Newport is the host to several international sailing events, including America’s Cup Trials , the Volvo Ocean Race, which returns to Newport in May 2018, and a variety of prestigious regattas.  If you’d like to get out on the water while visiting Newport, there are many public sailing organizations offering guests the opportunity to sail Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.  These include:

  • America’s Cup Charters, which gives you the opportunity to sail aboard the same 12-meter yachts used during past America’s Cup races.  Both ticketed sails and private charters are available.
  • Sailing in NewportSightsailing Newport, the oldest locally owned sailing company in Newport, offers daily cruises, sunset cruises and private charters on a variety of classic boats.  Their fleet includes the Aquidneck, an 80’ Schooner, Sightsailer, a 46’ sloop, and Starlight, an O’Day 34.
  • Classic Cruises of Newport offers both sailing experiences and cruises aboard their 19th century-style Schooner, Madeleine and the Rum Runner II; a restored prohibition era rum runner.
  • Sail Newport, located at Ft. Adams, is the top public sailing center in the Northeast.  Sail Newport has a new fleet of J-22s for rent, either with or without an instructor.  Reservations are required and, for a private rental, a 10 minute “check out” sail is required before your first rental.

If you don’t want to get out on the water yourself, you can still enjoy the historic sailing culture of Newport.  As always, at the end of your day sink into the luxurious accommodations at the Cliffside Inn.  You’ll wake up feeling refreshed, energized, and ready for the day that follows.  Book your summer getaway today.
