High Tea Every Afternoon

We feature two indulgent food experiences each day at Cliffside. In the morning, our multi-course, gourmet breakfast, and in the afternoon, our internationally acclaimed tea service -- named one of the 20 best in America (see below). Both are complimentary, available for guests only.

BREAKFAST  Enjoy a refined seasonal menu with five entreé choices plus breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, granola, fresh baked muffins and breads. House specialties include Eggs Newport, our seaside gastronomic twist on breakfast classic Eggs Benedict, with crab cakes replacing the Canadian bacon and English muffin; decadent banana nut French Toast; and on the lighter side, fresh berry crepes. All guest favorites. Although we are known for our tea, we proudly serve Peet's Coffee, which we believe to be the finest, connoisseur coffee blends available. We are the only hotel or Inn chosen by Pete's in Rhode Island to offer their coffees.

Enjoy breakfast fireside in our grand Victorian parlor or weather permitting, on the veranda or outdoor garden tables. A variety of newspapers is available each morning in the parlor. Breakfast is served 8 - 10 am.

AFTERNOON TEA  "Fit for the Queen of England," is how Fortune Magazine described our Legendary Newport Tea Service. Tea authority and writer Bruce Richardson named Cliffside one of the 20 best in America in his book "The Great Tea Rooms of America."

Regal without being stuffy, you will enjoy an epicurean delight you won't soon forget. Silver and porcelain tiers hold an array of sweets and savories that change daily. Tea sandwiches might include salmon and caper, hardboiled egg and cavier, pesto with tomato and mozzarella, cucumber and xcxcxcxc. or xcxcxcxc. Sweets include artisan chocolates, cookies, pies, fruit tarts and cakes. And we're known for our freshly baked scones accompanied with Devonshire Cream, handmade marmalades and fruit butter from England.

Guests choose a cup from our antique collection to enjoy our Legendary Newport Tea. You may find, as many guests do, our premium tea is the best you've ever tasted. Hand blended exclusively for us by America's preeminent master tea blenders, Harney and Sons, our connoisseur blend combines 3 of the world's finest single estate black teas to produce a truly elegant cup of tea.

Afternoon Tea is served from 4:30 - 5:30pm in the parlor, which during the Fall and Winter months takes on a special warm glow from the Victorian lighting and dancing flames of the fire on the inside, contrasted against the early outside darkness. During warmer weather, guests relax on the veranda and outdoor garden tables, and we serve iced teas well.
